When I revealed the new, striped look for our guest room last week, I’m sure some of you noticed that the room was looking a bit…empty. The nightstands that were in there before (that had previously lived in our master bedroom) were taken out of the room once I started painting, and since we knew we were going to replace them, we just didn’t bring them back in.
We (of course) knew that we didn’t want to just leave the room with nothing in it but a bed, so we set to work figuring out what we could do about nightstands. Our ideas for this room have gone in about a million different directions (as I showed you last week) and so when we started discussing what we wanted to do for accents, colors, and other furniture in the room we went through several different ideas before we actually settled on anything. At the time of painting the room, our plan was that we would keep most of the room relatively neutral and add in some kelly green accents – we thought the green would play really nicely off the bed, and it was even better once we decided on the pale pink for the walls, because I’m a huge fan of green and pink together.
Well, you already know how this story is going to end because I told you last week that we’re now planning on doing glossy black accessories and keeping the room really sophisticated and neutral. Why the change? Once we got some green accessories in the room (we’ll get to that in a minute) we realized that the pink and green combination is way too preppy for our house, and it stuck out like a sore thumb from the rest of our rooms. We definitely aren’t afraid of color and have a ton of it in our house, but introducing two brand new colors in one room was just a bit much for us – and Corey felt like the preppy look made the room feel a bit too girly for him. Since he’d already let me paint the room pink, I figured I should do what I can to help the room “man up” a bit, and I agreed to let go of the green accents.
But not before we made some bright kelly green bedside tables.
These tables won’t be sticking around forever, but I’m kind of in love with them so they’ll be in the room until we find a suitable (glossy black) replacement, and after that I’m really hoping we can find a new home for them somewhere around the house. We discussed the idea of just painting these black so they can stay, but they were never intended to be a long-term solution (we want something with a little more storage for this room), so we don’t want to spend any extra money on them until we know where they’re going to live permanently.
If the shape of the tables looks familiar, it’s because these tables are made from our old kitchen table. Remember that one?
My super creative husband came up with the idea of chopping the table in half to create two little nightstands, and I love how they turned out. It was a ridiculously simple project (all he did was measure how deep we wanted the tables to be and cut that much off of each end) with a huge impact.
See how easy?
I know we’ve decided that the pink and green combo isn’t sticking around (I’ll admit, it feels very out of place in our house) but I’m still just a little bit obsessed with it. And secretly pleased that we haven’t found replacement nightstands yet because I want just a little bit longer with my green beauties in here. I might even sneak in there every once in a while just to stroke them while whispering “my preciousssssss”.
Maybe.
We also learned in the process of working on this room that Ranger is beyond obsessed with our brass bed. He’s always thought he was a little dog (I swear, he thinks he weighs closer to 7 pounds than 70) and the insane height on this bed totally plays into his little dog fantasies – he loves to crawl around under the bed just like Cullen does in our room.
So that’s the story of how we once again changed our mind on something for this room, and how I fell in love with these nightstands (and that color). I know that black accessories will suit the look we’re going for in this room much better (and will flow with the rest of our house better) but I’ll definitely be a little sad to see these guys go.
Have you ever fallen in love with something for your home, only to realize it doesn’t “go” at all? How about not being able to make up your mind on what to do with a room? We can’t be the only indecisive ones!
